a harness and cross-tether is relatively safe for short trips.
The old dogs loved being out on the back but we always tied them down safely and never took them for long trips. Just 15-20 minute drives to the shops or to the back paddock
If I was ever to get a ute again I’d get dual-cab or a dedicated cage for the back.
